Start with a gentle cleanser, then add vitamin C, moisturiser and SPF. This streamlined routine protects your skin without overwhelming it.
Walk into any beauty hall and you will be told you need a serum, an essence, a toner, an eye cream, a mist and something with a name you cannot pronounce. It is easy to come away convinced that good skin requires forty minutes and twelve products every morning. In reality, the opposite is often true. A short routine that you actually follow every single day will outperform an elaborate one you abandon by Wednesday.
The morning is not the time for aggressive exfoliation or heavy layering. Your skin has just spent the night repairing itself, and it now needs protection more than it needs stimulation. Four steps – cleanse, vitamin C, moisturiser, sunscreen – cover the essentials: removing overnight build-up, defending against free radicals, keeping the barrier comfortable, and shielding everything from UV damage.
The order matters, and so does the texture. Thin, watery products go on first; richer, creamier ones go on top. If you remember nothing else, remember that.
If your skin feels tight or squeaky after washing, your cleanser is too harsh. That tightness is a sign you have removed some of the lipids that hold your skin barrier together, and it tends to backfire – oil production ramps up to compensate.
In the morning, most people do best with something gentle:
Use lukewarm water, not hot. Pat dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing, and leave your skin slightly damp – the next steps will absorb better and you will need less product overall.
Vitamin C is the one active ingredient genuinely worth adding in the morning. It helps neutralise the free radicals generated by pollution and UV exposure, supports collagen production, and gradually fades the look of uneven pigmentation.
Apply it to damp skin, after cleansing and before moisturiser. A few practical pointers:
If vitamin C genuinely irritates your skin no matter what you try, you can skip it. Sunscreen and moisturiser alone will still do more for your skin than a routine you cannot tolerate.
Moisturiser is not just about comfort – it seals in water and helps keep the outer layer of skin functioning properly, which in turn reduces redness and sensitivity. Wait around sixty seconds after your vitamin C before applying it, so the serum has a chance to settle.
Match the texture to your skin and the season:
Do not forget your neck, and take it down to the jawline at the very least. Warm the product between your fingertips and press it in rather than dragging. If your skin still feels tight an hour later, you need a richer formula; if it looks shiny by lunchtime, go lighter.
This is the step that does the most heavy lifting, and the one people skip most often. UVA rays reach you through clouds and window glass, and they are the main driver of premature lines, sagging and pigmentation. In the UK, sun protection is worth wearing from March through to October, and honestly, all year round if you are serious about your skin.
You need roughly a teaspoon for your face and neck – most people use a quarter of that. Choose a broad-spectrum formula with SPF 30 or higher and a UVA rating of at least four stars, then make it pleasant enough that you will keep reaching for it:
Reapply every two hours if you are outdoors, and top up with a stick or mist over makeup if that is easier. Sunscreen sits last, always – nothing goes on top of it in the morning.
Lay your products out in the order you use them, or write the sequence on a sticker inside your bathroom cabinet, until it becomes automatic. The whole four-step routine should take under three minutes once you are used to it.
Give it six to eight weeks before you judge the results. Skin turnover is slow, and consistency beats intensity every time. Change one thing at a time if you want to introduce something new, so you can tell what is actually working. And if your skin becomes persistently irritated, strip back to cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen for a fortnight before building up again.
Simple, done daily, is where the real results live.
