What to Expect from a Professional Facial Treatment

What to Expect from a Professional Facial Treatment

A professional facial cleanses, exfoliates and treats your skin. Ask about your concerns so the therapist can tailor the products.

Before You Book: The Consultation Matters

A professional facial is far more than a treat — it's a considered treatment for your skin. Before any products touch your face, a good therapist will spend time understanding your concerns, lifestyle and current routine. This consultation is the foundation of the entire experience, so don't be tempted to rush it.

You'll likely be asked about:

  • Your skin type — oily, dry, combination, sensitive or normal
  • Specific concerns such as breakouts, redness, pigmentation or fine lines
  • Your current skincare routine and any prescription treatments
  • Lifestyle factors like stress, sleep and water intake
  • Any allergies, sensitivities or recent cosmetic procedures

Be honest here. If you mention that your skin feels tight after cleansing, or that you've started using a new retinol, that changes the therapist's approach. They may skip certain exfoliants or adjust the massage pressure. The more they know, the more tailored your treatment will be.

What Happens During Your Treatment

While every facial differs, most follow a similar rhythm. You'll usually lie on a comfortable bed, often with a bolster under your knees and a warm towel over your shoulders. The room should feel calm — dim lighting, soft music, a subtle scent.

The treatment typically begins with a double cleanse. The first cleanse removes makeup, sunscreen and surface grime; the second cleanses the skin itself. Your therapist will use gentle, upward motions and may steam the skin briefly to soften congestion. Next comes exfoliation. This might be a physical scrub, a chemical peel with alpha-hydroxy acids, or a gentle enzyme mask. The aim is to lift dead cells so the products that follow can penetrate properly.

Extraction is often part of the session. If you have blackheads or milia, the therapist may gently press them out — this can feel slightly uncomfortable but shouldn't be painful. Always speak up if it hurts. After extraction, a treatment mask is applied. This could be anything from a hydrating sheet mask to a clay formula for oily skin. While the mask sets, you'll usually receive a facial, neck and shoulder massage.

The final steps are toning, eye cream, moisturiser and, in daylight, SPF. Many therapists finish with a lip balm and a scalp massage. The whole appointment usually lasts between 45 and 90 minutes.

Types of Facials Explained

Facials aren't one-size-fits-all. Knowing the main options helps you choose wisely.

  • Classic facial: A gentle cleanse, exfoliate, massage and mask. Ideal for maintenance and first-timers.
  • Deep-cleansing facial: Focuses on congestion, blackheads and oily areas. Often includes steam and extraction.
  • Hydrating facial: Uses hyaluronic acid, ceramides and rich moisturisers. Great for dry, tight or mature skin.
  • Anti-ageing facial: May include peptides, vitamin C, collagen masks or LED light therapy to boost firmness.
  • Chemical peel facial: Uses acids like glycolic or lactic to resurface the skin. Stronger versions may cause visible peeling for a few days.
  • Sensitive skin facial: Avoids fragrance, harsh exfoliants and heat. Uses calming ingredients like oat, aloe or chamomile.

If you're unsure, ask the therapist which facial suits your skin on the day. Skin changes with seasons, hormones and stress, so the right choice in January may differ from June.

Aftercare: Looking After Your Skin Post-Facial

What you do after your facial matters as much as the treatment itself. Your skin is freshly exfoliated and more permeable, so it needs gentle care.

  • Avoid makeup for at least six hours if possible, and ideally until the next morning.
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and hot showers for 24 hours — heat can irritate freshly treated skin.
  • Don't use retinol, exfoliating acids or strong vitamin C for two to three days unless advised otherwise.
  • Apply a gentle moisturiser and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol for the rest of the day.

Mild redness or tingling is normal and usually settles within a few hours. If you experience lasting irritation, contact the clinic. Most people see a healthy glow immediately, with the best results appearing two to three days later.

How Often Should You Book?

For most skin types, a professional facial every four to six weeks works well. That's roughly the length of a skin cell turnover cycle, so you're supporting the skin as it renews. If you're addressing a specific concern like acne or pigmentation, you might book a course of treatments closer together — perhaps every two to three weeks — then space them out.

Between appointments, keep your home routine simple and consistent. Cleanser, moisturiser and SPF are the non-negotiables. Don't over-exfoliate at home; let the professional treatments do the deeper work.

A good facial should leave you feeling relaxed and your skin looking refreshed — not stripped, sore or tight. If something doesn't feel right during the treatment, say so. Your therapist wants you to leave happy and comfortable. With honest communication and a little aftercare, a professional facial becomes a genuinely effective part of your self-care routine.
